In this paper the author tries to delineate not only the social and pedagogical bases underlying the concept which grounded the creation of high school courses evening classes, but also the social role such courses perform. To attain such an aim the researcher analysed the education policies involved and the decisions taken for the organization and expansion of these courses. After examining the pertinent and available bibliography; the author proceeded to select and to analyse documents and references produced between 1750 and 1930.
