The scope of this research is to evidence the relevance of photography as historical documentation.The text shows that photography has been used as a means for recovering thee memory of the relations between work and education. The significant contribution of the work developed by the professional schools in the State of Rio de Janeiro during the first half of the century is also pointed out. The schools mentioned are: João Alves in Vila Isabel, Visconde de Maua in Marechal Hermes and Henrique Lage in Niteroi.
