This article describes and analyses the results of the work developed by a group of Afro-Brazilians linked to the Catholic Church and ideologically inspired by the Liberation Theology. By means of the educational techniques developed by the Church, the group proposed the construction of an identity which could enable Afro-Brazilian to fight prejudice and discrimination. The analysis is based upon a research carried out in the city of São Paulo between 1985 and 1988.
