This article discusses the unremitting and precarious functioning of primary schools of the rural área identifying their clientele, mainly student, workers and presents data concerning the pedagogical practices of the lay teachers and of those holding a college degree. The paper is supported by reports by provide by the above mentioned teachers who had worked in primary schools of the rural area of the State of Minas Gerais between the years of 1918 and 1939.
