This article intends to focus some Portuguese pedagogical discussion aspects, expressed in magazines destined to educators, at the frontier between the end of the ninetieth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. At that time, they were looking for firming the Portuguese modernity through the irradiation and the transformation of the school life. To be modern in education it was necessary to give the school some scientificity, subject to be translated with a double face: on one side, to isolate the child from the primary community and to disapprove the family educative authority; on the other side, to attempt to customs and to socially desirable behavior formation for composing the society of the future.
