This article is about civic festivals in the state of Minas Gerais at the beginning of the Brazilian monarchy. It attempts to understand the social values and meanings  the festivals sought to create and spread amongst the political strategies they represented during the novelty of the inhabitants of the villages, and the political strategies they represented during the novelty of the first years after Independence in 1822. Our aim in also to comprehend what sort of political life the inhabitants of Minas Gerais experienced in their civic festivals and how, by means of the political values and ideals they set in motion, a social identity was created.
