CARRILLO, Isabel. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2003, n.38, pp.157-172. ISSN 0102-4698.

Despite the big social and educational challenges insistently announced by the 20th century, including the prediction that the 21th century would be the women´s century, we are nowadays aware that the juridical equality achieved in some countries, although it seems theoretically satisfactory, it is not in everyday life. Day after day, our world goes on immerse in problems which the complete development of the human rights for women all over the planet. It is thus still urgent that the political agenda and the pedagogical debates stop following the rhythm of audiences and instead concentrate their attention in gender and education, opening space to rethink the models which are reproductive and generative of injustice, so that it will be possible to question the class societies where ‘women are the inferior colony of the system’, subjugated by power structures which, either explicitly or in a veiled way, submit them to various forms of exclusion and oppression. It is from the awareness that all of us are subjects and agents of reality, and thus responsible for either its perpetuation or its transformation, that we can think about education as a political and belligerent space which is not isolated from the world, but rather departs from this same world in order to constantly rethink the relationships of justice, liberty, equality, and solidarity between men and women, opposing itself to the positions which justify the women´s discrimination. However, we can verify that, as in other instances, the law does not guarantee the change inside the schools. In order to transform the educational practice it is necessary to promote changes in attitudes and values which will permit a new look towards the differences, the feminine and the masculine. Education must rescue its human dimension in order to find out the sensibility and the commitment which enables one to rebel against an unequal world and imagine other ways of life which would be fair and solidary.
