In this article, analyze the attempt to create the Sociedade Phylopolytechnica of São João Del-Rei, an institution that was to be connected with the town´s Public Library. The Statutes of the Society show that various forms of access to the written word had been “orchestrated” by the eighteenth century elite for their own  education. The establishments, understood in their context, are examples that reveal the ways in which the men of the period sought, through the literature, to attain a higher level of civilization and progress.
