This article intends to discuss and to analyze how a set of actions initially taken by young students and, later on, by institutional actions have, made possible the permanency of underprivileged students in the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), since its establishment. UFMG official documents were used to carry out the analysis, and a set of original documents, produced by the Underprivileged Students Fund, Edelweiss Barcellos, between 1932 and 1935. Among other conclusions, the article shows that the entrance of such students was slow and gradual, always facing institutional resistance. It also shows, as a result of the involvement of actors such as Mendes Pimentel and Baêta Viana, the establishment of a foundation to assist underprivileged university students, know today as Fundação Universitária Mendes Pimentel (Mendes Pimentel University Foundation).
