Abstract

DUSSEL, Inés. Edicating the gaze: notes on the uses of images in teacher education. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2005, n.41, pp.157-174. ISSN 0102-4698.

Images are one of the most important modes of representation today, probably more important than words. We live in a society overpopulated by images, from tv to advertising; learning how to read them and analyzing the burdens they carry with themselves, opening them up to broader contexts or putting them along other narratives and discourses that interpret reality, is an educational task of the first rank. In this article, I intend to contribute to a discussion about how to ‘educate the gaze,’ reflecting on an experience that has been developed in FLACSO/ Argentina that has included producing educational documentaries and teacher education. This experience has led us to question the assumption of a total identification between ‘seeing’ and ‘knowing’, and to underscore the importance of working  with visual representation and debating its claims of truth.

Keywords : Images; Teacher Education; Discrimination.
