VILLALTA, Luiz Carlos; GOMES, Maíra Siman; RAMOS, Simone Calil  e  MICHEL, Silvia Lara. Cinema and History: some reflections and an account of a teaching experience. Educ. Rev. [online]. 2005, n.41, pp.175-191. ISSN 0102-4698.

Until the second half of the 20th century, historians were prevented from availing themselves of cinema and its interpretations and manipulations of reality. However, following historiographic renewal that occurred particularly in the context of the Annales movement, the conceptual frontiers of historical sources have been enormously expanded and another view of ‘document’ has emerged. With such background, it became possible to see cinema as belonging to the universe of historians. But how can history take advantage of cinema as a source? How can cinema be used as a didactic resource in history teaching? In this article we present, firstly, some reflections on the relationship between history and cinema, in an effort to understand the experience of extension course where national cinematographic productions were utilized as didactic resources in history teaching. The article focuses in the work done with the film ‘Carlota Joaquina, Princess of Brazil’ (1995), directed by Carla Camurati.
