Abstract

LEAO, Andréa Borges. Universes of Devotion, Wisdom, and Moral: Garnier's bookstores for the youth (1858-1920). Educ. Rev. [online]. 2006, n.43, pp.189-210. ISSN 0102-4698.

This paper analyses the child-oriented collections contained in the year 1858’s catalogues of the bookstore Baptiste-Louis Garnier, located in Rio de Janeiro, and their further developments in 1920. As a model of the export policy of the French publishing industry, and consequently the heritage formation of the works necessary for the development of our bookselling trade and literary autonomy, Garnier strongly believed in the long-lasting feature of the “classical child genre”. Accordingly, those collections have been adapted and republished, which demonstrates an intricate relationship between its Latin American subsidiary and the headquarter in France, as well the effects of the formation of a literary taste.
