Abstract

Information literacy is presented here as a systemic structure with a set of capacities, which assists to integrate actions of locating, selecting, accessing, organizing and using information and generating knowledge, object of learning, in order to help in decision making and problem solution. The implementation of this process throughout the academic life represents an extremely necessary aspect in contemporary society, concerning the pedagogical and 'learning to learn' processes, contributing to educate critic, active, responsible, and self-dependent citizens in the seek and use of information. Notwithstanding, in order to carry out information literacy in basic education, it is necessary to surpass a few challenges, such as: the difficulty to change pedagogical culture, inappropriate teacher's development, teaching and learning concepts, curriculum organization, and the absence of adequate information groundwork.
