The principle of compulsory school has been contested by the movement for homeschooling in Brazil. Historical aspects are very important to understand the current compulsory school attendance in Brazil as well the past of this legislation. This study brings legal and historical texts about this question and also aims to point out conceptualizations and arguments that support both positions.
