This paper aims at tracing a brief historical reconstruction of interdisciplinary research in Brazil and its importance for the construction of knowledge. To this end, it adopts as a bibliographic and documentary research as methodological procedure, in order to understand interdisciplinary research in Brazil. Despite the article locus is Brazil, it is important to organize interdisciplinary knowledge worldwide in order to understand its trajectory in the country. The results indicate the main factors that hinder interdisciplinary research, as well as a way to guide actions that can mitigate such barriers and promote possibilities for advancement in the area because of an increasingly complex society.
