This article presents a global view of current qualitative research in education. The first portion analyses social and political changes that should lead to the adaptation of qualitative methods of investigation. The second portion examines changes needed in analytical categories. The third presents criteria for validating qualitative research in the new social and political context. The fourth indicates the limits and possibilities for generalization. The final section points out some of the problems involved in the restitution and publication of results.
