Abstract

FAVERO, Maria de Lourdes de Albuquerque. Autonomy and power in the University: obstacles and challenges. Perspectiva [online]. 2004, vol.22, n.01, pp.197-226. ISSN 0102-5473.

The article argues that in order to understand autonomy and power in the University it is necessary to explain what is a University. With this in mind, the article seeks to show that due to its singular functions, the University should be a space for scientific research, as well as for the production and dissemination of knowledge, the creation of culture and the development of technologies. It discusses the concept and meaning of university autonomy, from the 1960’s until today. It highlights the impacts and challenges experienced particularly by public universities. It concludes by stating that University autonomy should be understood not as a gift, but rather as a utopia to be reached. It urges that the work of the university be reconstructed with responsibility and intelligence, with the understanding that university reform is an undertaking, a process of permanent construction.

Keywords : University Autonomy; Universities and Colleges.
