This article is about the issue of work and the perceptions about work held by young factory workers and makes some comments about their schooling. To undertake this study young men and women workers and company managers at three auto parts factories in São Bernardo do Campo were interviewed with a questionnaire that included open and closed questions. First the problematic of the study was contextualized and inserted within educational research about the relationship between youth, work and school. Then some aspects of the profile of youth investigated were presented, focusing on their experience with factory work. Finally, a portrait is presented of the different understandings of the meaning of work in the lives of young men and women workers.
