Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss the process of identification of the citizen from the perspective of the New Writing Studies, comparing it with the practices found in schools. This process, influenced by local conditions, develops throughout life, beginning with the issue of a child’s birth certificate and complemented continuously in the identification of the individual as a member of different groups. In this process, the name should be understood as the basic element of the texts that constitute the social practices of this identification. To focus on the name without inserting it into the broader process signifies limiting the formation of citizenship.
