Abstract

WARDE, Mirian Jorge. Rethinking the Social Studies of the History of Childhood in Brazil. Perspectiva [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.01, pp.21-39. ISSN 0102-5473.

The social studies and history of childhood in Brazil had a promising initial impulse at the end of the 1980’s. More than 15 years later, these studies appear to have lost their initial impetus, have grown more slowly and have displayed a conceptual and analytical homogeneity. Based on the review of Brazilian and international bibliographies, this article examines some challenges to be confronted by the contributions of the history of childhood in Brazil. On one hand this involves the examination of the extensive and diversified international literature, particularly those called new social studies of childhood with the goal of broadening the conceptual horizons. On the other hand, it implies overcoming the prejudice that blocks the necessary dialog with the biological and psychological sciences.
