This paper presents a reflection on distance education (DE), based on the theoretical and methodological approach of media education. Using a broad perspective that involves the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to teaching and learning processes - it aims to shift the discussion from the modality to the method. Citizen education through DE is associated to a critical and creative appropriation of media in both dimensions: as a pedagogical tool and as an object of study. This article recognizes the education of teachers through DE as a space of possibilities for critical education, as long as it is considered under this approach. It aims to contribute to the discussion about the concepts to be used for DE by analyzing and presenting some challenges faced when one tries to offer DE as media education. The paper concludes that the subjects’ potential for a critical and creative appropriation of technical tools is an essential part of teacher education, to make possible the methodological shift required in contemporary education.
