Resumen

MERCON, Juliana. Parte de la naturaleza: sobre el cuerpo como potencia compositiva. Perspectiva [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.02, pp.473-496. ISSN 0102-5473.

Among the constellation of myths that have contributed to the current socioecological crisis is the belief that we are substantial or atomized individuals whose lives somehow evolve separately from the environment that we try to “control”. Ignorance in relation to our ontological interdependence lies at the base of many of our (self )destructive attitudes and has been reinforced by various theoretical systems throughout Western history. At the margin of Platonic dualisms, Judaic-Christian transcendences, and the Cartesian cogito, Benedictus de Spinoza’s (1632-1677) philosophy invites us to rethink the foundations of our complex reality. My purpose in this paper is to construct productive relations between some dimensions of his philosophy, environmental thought and education. We begin with Spinoza’s conception of the body, which is defined by both its productive or causal power and its sensitive or receptive power. The human body’s relational and affective character will also allow us to consider it as a compositive power. In deconstructing the dichotomy between nature and culture, I propose that we reflect upon the effects that human-technological compositions have on our power to think and act. In conclusion, I will comment on the empowering role of education to integrate epistemic, ethical, political and environmental dimensions of our existence, and to show us that we are, after all, interdependent parts of Nature.
