Abstract

BALCA, Ângela. Novos mundos para o mundo: perspetivas multiculturais na literatura infantil e juvenil. Perspectiva [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.03, pp.909-924. ISSN 0102-5473.

Given that Portugal is a country with a long history of relationships with other peoples and cultures, we intend to give an account of texts that show us not only how Portugal relates with these peoples, but how the “Other” looks at us. How do other people see us? What image do they have of us and how do they convey it to new generations? How do they interpret the same events and the same facts and from what point of view? To try to answer these questions, we consider texts published in Brazil that are potentially received by children and young people that focus on a historical episode common to both countries - the arrival and stay of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil. The first aim of this essay is to present these texts; understand how the Other looks at us, leading us to question our ethnocentrism, which appears as another goal. The essay uses a comparative methodology, comparing the two texts, and analyzes the paratexts, the action and characters. The most important results indicate the need for reading mediators to contribute to the rediscovery not only of this historical period but also of the figure of the monarch Dom João VI.
