The purpose of this article is to analyze the function of learning in school education. We presented part of an Ruben Alves’s interview, "Learning for what?" and we discussed some important aspects of the author’s speech. The text shows that the school education has been underestimate, with a great dissection of content and reducing the role of the teacher as a mere facilitator of the process of teaching and learning. From the issues , we seek to make counterpoint, and conducted analysis through interlocutions with other authors who defend the school education as a fundamental locus in human formation, responsible for the socialization of scientific, artistic and philosophical knowledge accumulated historically. In this direction, we understand that learning is closely linked to human development, and it may constitute an instrument of struggle and transformation.
