Abstract

DIONISIO, Maria de Lourdes. Adult education: new opportunities for literacy. Perspectiva [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.1, pp.21-37. ISSN 0102-5473.  https://doi.org/10.5007/2175-795X.2014v32n1p21.

In a society almost entirely structured on written texts, literacy practices with which individuals must be involved daily are of all kinds and complexity. The belief that participation in the written world depends only on the domain of specific comprehension skills (mainly) and of production of texts has been deconstructed theoretically and empirically, particularly in the context of what has come to be called New Literacy Studies that advocate literacy as a set of social practices, historically and culturally situated, where events take place mediated by texts. This same perspective puts under scrutiny what counts as literacy and, in doing so, the relationship between institutional or dominant literacies and personal or vernacular. In this paper, we present some results of a study conducted with adults involved in a process of Recognition, Validation and Certification of Competences (RVCC), whose main objective was to understand how such an educational process contributes to the transformation of literate identities. Data were collected through questionnaires with 113 adults, collection of documents, and interviews. Analysis of the obtained information allowed to see the richness and variety of the use of texts by those adults considered 'illiterate', but also other changes in their literate identities, particularly as regards their 'new' viewpoints towards their vernacular practices.
