The right to education in prison is based on the constitutional principle of the right to education for all. The specifi cities of the prison environment require the development of educational policies able to atend them. This article aims to analyze how the education of young and adults is inserted in the prison space and what are the meanings of schooling for women students in custody. The research that inspired this study was intended to answer the following problem: How are the school experiences meaningful to the women's life experience who are in justice custody? The research had an qualitative-quantitative approach and data collection instruments were used: document analysis, participant observation, interviews and questionnaires. By analyzing the school experiences approached into the prison school, it was possible to observe an action of entrance and permanence in school: at first, the approach was justified by the occupation of idle time or to decrease days of penalty, however, this relationship with study was resized when a taste for studying was (re) discovered. The place occupied by the academic institution and the idea of adult education for prison spaces contributed to give new meaning to schooling: names were recovered, the historicity students' life trajectory and questions about the living conditions and the reasons to commit crimes, have become possible projections for a future.
