This paper is a reflection in regard to the articulation among empathetic understanding, sensitivity and the dialogical dimension, with developments that may contribute to changes in the conception and practices of school teaching of History, especially in secondary school. In this reflection we sought to work with ways that may contribute to overcoming difficulties traditionally found in fulfilling two of the four purposes proposed for Brazilian Secondary School and which are stated in the Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional (National Educational Guidelines and Foundations) of 1996, namely: preparation for exercising citizenship and for personal development. With this matter as a point of departure, we carried out a bibliographical study to define authors and texts that could assist in dealing with this issue. We conclude that there is a need to bring about empathetic understanding, through classroom activity, of the historicity expressed in life by introducing the idea of sensitivity, seen as the establishment of a dialogical dimension of communicative lived-experience which allows perception of similarities and differences among the subjects of the conversation towards an understanding of the historical world.
