This article has as its objective to characterize the event of literary literacy proposed in Prova Brasil (Brazil Exam - a nationwide test of proficiency in Math and Portuguese language for students in grades 4 and 8 - 9th grade - every three years) and analyze if and how that proposal approaches the concepts of literary reading (Cândido, 1981; Aguiar, 2000; Hansen, 2005) one among several literacy practices that individuals take part of. the research is supported by the New Literacy Studies (STREET, 2010), according to which it is understood as a set of social practices of the written language. the research corpus is made of sample activities from the subject Portuguese Language performed in Prova Brasil, aimed at the junior high students from the 9th grade, available in the INEP website. Results reached state that there is a vanishing of literature in its specificities, as the fictional genres are used very often either as a tool for grammar assessment or as an object for reading where the literary texts` specificities are not considered, once such activities do not emphasize the knowledge of the formal aspects in literary writing.
