This research results from the interest in questioning the sexual binary based on biological determinism, considering that, since childhood, manners of carrying out masculinity and femininity are taught, based in sexist and patriarchal social constructions according to sex and its corresponding gender. It had as focus the study of feminist gender theories, in a post-structuralist bias of analysis. In this way, an analysis of ten children's books which were awarded in the last decade (2001-2010) by the Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil (FNLIJ) was proposed. The goals of the study were to understand how the gender issues are demonstrated in these books and if/how they contribute to the maintenance of the stereotypes of gender and subsequent attitudes of submission by women in relation to the male domination. To reach them, we used the method of Discourse Analysis in the texts of these books and Semiotic Analysis of Still Images in their illustrations, getting a proposal of triangulation of methods. We notice that traditional gender stereotypes are still strongly present in these contemporary works, exposing motherhood, marriage and male dependency associated with female figures. In the other hand, issues like free will to express themselves in public scenarios, courage and virility were linked to male figures, succumbing to a traditionally stereotyped end concerning gender issues, and, this way, creating ideas of how to intervene in order to promote gender equity in childhood.
