Abstract

GONZALEZ, Isabel Mocifio. Memory and history in the picturebook: dialogical relations between text and images. Perspectiva [online]. 2018, vol.36, n.1, pp.15-34. ISSN 2175-795X.  https://doi.org/10.5007/2175-795X.2018v36nlp15.

Immersed in a society dominated by images, in recent years, picture books have proliferated whose themes have long been considered taboo, such as wars, conflicts and death,. The objective of this study is to analyze how these issues are currently presented to children and young people as well as to adult readers. This approach will be based on the following picturebooks: Fumo [Smoke] (2008), by Antón Fortes and Joanna Concejo; and O Princípio [The beginning] (2012), by Paula Carballeira and Sonja Danowski. We believe that these works constitute significant proposals for the perspectives adopted on the themes they deal with, as well as for the requirement of an active reader owing to the visual reading they present, a reader who has to be able to interpret the messages and the multiple connections that are established between the text and the image, as well as the dialogical relations that provide different levels of reading. We adopt a comparative perspective from which we seek to analyze how the knowledge of the past is constructed and communicated, which elements contribute to a critical view of the topic addressed and which are the main author strategies that characterize visual and textual reading. These readings are based primarily on polysemy, in external referentiality, in poetic function, in alterity and in a semantic framework that focuses and delimits the field of reflection and of inner reading. For all this, in both books, words and images have the value of contributing to a (re)creation of collective memory through particular experiences and testimonies that denounce the atrocities that marked the becoming of the recent History of humanity, whose existence must be made known to children and youth to promote a culture of peace.

Keywords : Picture Book; War; Textual Visual Reading.
