Abstract

SILVA, Fabrício de Oliveira da; RIBEIRO, Marinalva Lopes  and  MALTA, Hélia Lucila. Types and meanings of motivation for the choice of a licentiate graduation course. Perspectiva [online]. 2018, vol.36, n.2, pp.741-760.  Epub Jan 01, 2018. ISSN 2175-795X.  https://doi.org/10.5007/2175-795x.2018v36n2p741.

This work analyses the types and directions for motivation at choosing a graduation course, resorting of students’ social representations in a public university at Bahia state (Brazil). The theoretical background for the data interpretation was mainly given by contributions of Arruda, Bezara and Cerdeiriña, Dubar, Martins, Moscovici, among others. This investigation, based on the qualitative perspective, was performed with seventy-seven students from four different courses for teaching degree : Geography, Languages , Music, and Chemistry. A quiz was applied, asking about the motivations which lead to a certain choice and, about the relevance that they would give to that profession. It was concluded that there are two types of motivation, one intrinsic, coming from the will, desire, taste, without the influence of external factors such as rewards, pressures and threats; and another that is marked by outside influences such as pressures and rewards, as for instance to get a job placement. The study shows that the teaching profession is valued as being the main one, on the grounds that it is the teaching base of all other professions
