The aim of this paper is to analyze the context of a classroom where educating for responsible citizenship means helping students develop the ability to actively participate in democratic processes; democratic participation includes engaging in dialogue about fair and equitable societies, as well as actively creating and maintaining equitable communities within the classroom and beyond. In-depth data were constructed from ethnographic research conducted across an year and were analyzed from a cultural historical perspective. The findings illustrate classroom practices that position classroom members as democratic subjects through their social relations and through riogrous construction of academic knowledge.
