This is a study that analyzes school essays produced by students who attended the University and school integration Program of the first degree of the urban periphery of Porto Alegre (PERICAMPUS), coordinated by the Faculty of Education/UFRGS. We have located more than 150 writings of students from 5th to 8th grade of elementary school, between the years 1986 to 1991, through a analysis of documents, a mapping to identify the subjects of essays and the questioning of the discursive content of the writings. The research falls within the field of history of education, in its interfaces with the history of written culture.
