The article analyzes the internationalization of higher education in Brazil, aiming to establish interrelationships with the context of knowledge production and emerging contexts. The state of knowledge principles was used to delineate the main trends of internationalization, from which they signal theses and dissertations available in the database of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology. In the analyzed papers, the main elements that constitute the internationalization of higher education in the perspective of expansion are: the formation of research networks, international cooperation, academic mobility and institutional strategies; the internationalization of higher education is closely related to the phenomenon of globalization; academic mobility contributes to the recognition and understanding of intercultural elements, migration flows and channels of communication and joint and qualified production between countries; in the global south, there is a strong conception of regional integration and in the global north there is prioritization of internationalization with economic ends.
