CARDOSO, Fernanda Luísa de Miranda  y  MARTINEZ, Silvia Alicia. The São José Operário Assistance Service: from social assistance to education for blind persons (1956-1963). Rev. Educ. Questão [online]. 2019, vol.57, n.51, e-15557.  Epub 13-Sep-2019. ISSN 1981-1802.  https://doi.org/70.21680/1981-1802.2019v57n51id15557.

This article intends to understand the course and social meaning of the São José Operário Assistance Service, within a countryside context of the state of Rio de Janeiro in the initial years of its foundation, from 1956 to 1963, when it implemented an institution for blind persons. Conceived by the daughter of the owner of two of Campos’ sugar mills, together with some women of the local elite, the Assistance Service simultaneously brought together the practices of philanthropy, Christian charity, and public subsidies . We highlight the theoretical contributions of Magalhães (1998) in relation to the research of educational institutions. Methodologically, we prioritize the technique of triangulation of sources, through documents from the institution's historical archive, the press and oral interviews. A network of sociability was identified: State, sugar industry, Campos' high society, women's elite, catholic church and service clubs.

Palabras clave : Assistance institutions; History of Education; Special education; Education for blind persons.
