This study aims to analyze the consequences of the institution of the hour-activity in the work of the high school teacher at Piauí state, within the context of the main educational policies implemented in Brazil in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. In this regard, we conducted a literature review, with the help of a documentary research, about the working hours of basic education teachers in the country and the educational policies that regulate the hour-activity. Then, we analyze the data from semi-structured interviews conducted with two managers of the Regional Education Management of the Piauí State Secretariat of Education, 20 high school teachers and one member of the Piauí Public Basic Education Workers Union. The results show that the progress in the hour-activity fulfilment is confronted with the still inadequate working conditions in schools, with mismanagement in the pedagogical organization of the teacher's working time with low salaries.
