This article proposes to understand the procedures of teachers in the organization and development of their work, in face of the conditions found in real contexts. It starts with the conception of ergonomics to analyze the work developed by high school teachers in the context of a public school. Using semi-structured interviews and observation of classes, the time and space for teaching planning are described and analyzed. It was possible to show that the time allocated for planning is insufficient, considering the diversity of students and classes that the teachers serve, and that they do not have an environment that offers adequate resources and spaces at school. Thus, this action is usually performed at the teachers' residence, occupying a considerable part of their rest period. This does not appear to be recorded, nor considered, nor formally accounted for as time of work. Therefore, the label “planning hours” ends up hiding the variety and complexity of actions that make up teacher planning.
