We present in this work the relevance that the book and reading occupied in the schools of Maranhão from the education and teaching press, especially in the newspapers of the former primary education institutions between the years of 1902 to 1932. We aim to understand in this work the discourses about the book and these newspapers reading and what was their role in the school and non-school context. This research is based on two moments: a priori, on the bibliographical survey of the authors who address questions about the book, the reading and the education and teaching press. In the second moment, on a documentary research, in this case, on the newspapers of these institutions of primary education, referring to the years 1900 to 1932. We concluded that these newspapers were used as a way of criticizing issues related to teaching, mainly those that referred to the reading methods and the importance of reading in the formation of the individual.
