PINHEIRO, Welington da Costa  e  ALVES, Laura Maria da Silva Araújo. The education boys in the Amazon: the case of the Instituto Orfanológico do Outeiro (Orphans Institute of Outeiro island), Belém city, state of Pará (1903-1913). Rev. Educ. Questão [online]. 2020, vol.58, n.56, e-20853.  Epub 11-Ago-2021. ISSN 1981-1802.  https://doi.org/10.21680/1981-1802.2020v58n56id20853.

The present article aims to analyze the educational practices developed at the Instituto Orfanológico do Outeiro (Orphans Institute of Outeiro island). This was a prominent institution in the care and education of poor childhood, in the period from 1903-1913 in the Amazon portion of Pará. The study, of documentary type, is inserted within the scope of the history of educational institutions. The sources of the research were the journal A Província do Pará (The Province of Pará), Message of the Governors, as well as circular letters, ordinances and reports from the investigated institution. These were analyzed in the light of Bakhtinian discursive theory, focusing on the ideological discourse category. The results showed that the education offered in the Institute was based on a rigid organization of time/space and composed of educational practices that intended to form civilized, disciplined, healthy and patriotic citizens, giving a “good” destiny to poor children in the Amazon, considered, according to the discourse of the time, as brute, uncivilized and rude, needing investment to be useful to society.
