This article reflects a classic problem, from the maxim of “know thyself”, described in the Oracle of Delphi, and the imperative “become who you are” written by Píndaro. The methodological design was characterized in bibliographic research, taking on a qualitative approach in conceptual and philosophical analyzes. From this, resulted the perception that the maxim of “become who you are” contributed to cultural decay and gave rise to a gregarious conscience and a spirit-conscious herd. In turn, Nietzsche proposes the reverse: “become who you are” as an educational tragedy in the sense of facing life, as a knowledge of oneself and a different will of oneself, in terms of the full realization of human being. We conclude that the path to a transformation of Bildung occurs from the maxim of “become who you are” as a condition for the emergence of free spirits that conquered themselves through a formation of self-education or self-cultivation.
