BEZERRA, Ariadny  y  SIMOES, Regina Helena Silva. Control and resistance of the regency in Espírito Santo (1908-1909): the drama of teacher Joanna Passos. Rev. Educ. Questão [online]. 2020, vol.58, n.58, e-21595.  Epub 16-Oct-2020. ISSN 1981-1802.  https://doi.org/10.21680/1981-1802.2020v58n58id21595.

This article investigates the unique resistance process of teacher Joanna Passos, in view of her dismissal from the exercise of public regency, in the context of the Educational Reform instituted in Espírito Santo by Carlos Alberto Gomes Cardim (1908-1909), focusing on “strategies played” (LEVI, 2000) by the teacher, analyzed in the relations between biographical and contextual elements. It uses, as sources, government and public notaries documents, and journalistic articles from the perspective of micro-historical analysis (LEVI, 1996, 2000). In contrast to the republican ideology expressed in official speeches, it considers that the teacher's non-conformity evidences arbitrariness of the public power, which supported locally dominant oligarchies practices, such as authoritarianism, nepotism, moral attacks, patronage and private interests of the elite, which affected the provision of educational public services. In this context, the teacher's resistance, widely printed in the press and followed with interest by segments of Espírito Santo society, puts into question margins of possibilities for conscious choices that, according to Levi (1996), fuel changes.
