In this study, we seek to understand aspects of formal and informal education in writings of the self. For this purpose, Helena Morley's diary is considered as a privileged source and object of analysis. From the methodological point of view, the study is anchored, on the one hand, in the assumptions of the studies on writings of the self, notably, in the perspective indicated by Gusdorf (1991) and Lejeune (1996); on the other hand, it is structured according to the analytical keys derived from the concepts of school form (VINCENT, LAHIRE and THIN, 2001) and school cultures (Vinão Frago, 2001). The context in which the narrative is developed is the city of Diamantina, first called Arraial do Tejuco (Camp of Tejuco), which had gained prominence during the diamond mining process in the late 19th century. Aware of school devices and moral order, Helena Morley’s self-referential text reveals nuances of the country in the transition from Empire to Republic, as well as the paradoxes of slavery.
