This paper develops reflections on circumstances of the process of direct election for school principal in the municipal schools of Natal, capital of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, highlighting how this mechanism contributes to the improvement of democratic management. As empirical corpus, we used information systematized from 7 (seven) interviews with historical individuals involved in this endeavor, whose principle were the achievements and the limits of this process. We conclude that, although contaminated by limits and contradictions, the process of choosing school principals contributed to the construction, in the school daily routine, of a certain democratic practice that was being reinforced with the creation of school councils and with the elaboration of the political-pedagogical project.
