This study aims to understand the institutionalization process of professional development policies for professors in five public universities in southern Brazil, based on the concepts of space and place. We mapped, in the websites of the universities, the spaces that take care of the task of promoting their own professors’ formation and we conducted interviews with eight managers. In the organizational structure of the universities, these policies are carried out by the pro-rectories that deal with teaching and/or undergraduate issues, a perspective that was reinforced by interviews. Only one institution does not have this space well defined and reinforced in institutional documents. The other universities are already more advanced in this process, constituting themselves as a place for professor training. We point out that professor training actions should not be restricted to one pro-rectory, since the university pedagogy requires a broad articulation of university functions.
