In this article, we analyze the dynamics established in the use of textbooks at Liceu Maranhense through the local press, using the theoretical-methodological assumptions of cultural history, to capture the materiality of artifacts as products and discourses. We cross established norms, recurrent practices, and innovations that accompanied the teaching programs via reforms to maintain the school market. It is concluded that students/authors conformed to the ideals of schooling and technical concepts, according to the conceptual armatures in vogue, in addition to their own representativeness as intellectuals, ensuring the approval, indication and consumption of works in instruction and competition with national and international productions.
