This study aims at examining the student-researchers’ understanding and involvement in the process of scientific production regarding the construction of ‘the state of the question’ of their object of investigation. It discusses the domains the student-researchers must reach in order to construct ‘the state of the question’, as well as some procedures that can be useful to complete this stage of the research, including considerations over the epistemological implications of the process. The methodological resources to approach these reflections come mostly from debates and discussions during courses and seminars on research methodology, and tutorial sessions concerning monographs, theses, and doctoral dissertations.
