This paper discusses the results of an educational survey (Saeb 2001) concerning education organized in cycles, mainly based on an analysis of the general context in which the cycles were implemented, the school conditions and the teachers’ attitudes in such schools. The analysis was based on a comparison between regular schools organized in grades and schools organized in cycles. The results showed significant differences in percentage terms between these two categories as well as highly relevant aspects in relation to actions needed to implement the cycle system in Brazilian schools.
