This article aims at putting forward some ideas about the role played by tools and criteria which are essential in the assessment of learning and the evaluation of impacts in professional training programs. However, this cannot be carried out solely by means of written exams. Contextual tasks are also indispensable so that tools and criteria gain vital importance and should not be regarded at random. On the other hand, evaluating the sequence of a training action, the impact produced on the professional and on the working environment demands other conditions beyond tools and criteria. One must consider the planning of training actions, entertaining the possibility of a dialogue between participants and those responsible for human resources. This demands a strong integration of all those involved so as to place training and assessment in the “heart” of the institutions’ activities as a means of improving the characteristics of an individual and of the community. We hope this article will stimulate reflection on how to improve our assessment practices regarding learning in training programs so as to fit methodological procedures to the reality we face.
