Mostly, the studies of Brazilian higher education refer to public schools and when reference is made to private schools, attention is turned to the teachers, installations and infrastructure, job market, marketing strategies and institutional evaluation. Studies indicate that universities, in general, have little knowledge of the characteristics of their students and, it seems, little attention has been given by private higher education institutions to their student body and to a deeper knowledge of students’ characteristics. The students’ living conditions need to be known and taken into consideration for use in the development of policies and strategies for student assistance. The central question of this investigation is to identify and analyze the social, economic and cultural profile of the students at Faculdade Social da Bahia (FSBA), in a context which favors expansion of higher education and access to this level of education. The study sought to determine the profile of these students, making a comparative study with UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) students and then, based on some independent variables, to embark on a comparative analysis of students’ profile in relation to day and night classes and the nature of the courses. Other objectives of the study were to relate some student characteristics, income, parental schooling, elementary and secondary schools of origin with their performance, taking into account their results in the college entrance examination and their performance in the courses. The statistical analyses were carried out on a data bank produced by the application of a questionnaire; the SPSS program was used to process these data.
