Higher education in Brazil gives preference to teaching and research, ignoring the pivotal role extension activities play in professional training. In this study, we analyze extension activities carried out at the Center of Biological Sciences (CCB) at the Federal University of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, between 2000 and 2003. During this period, 110 activities took place, including projects, events and courses. We analyzed the categories, subjects, target audience, academic involvement, scientific publications, funding and partnerships. We show that the interaction between university and society is way below their needs and possibilities, and that it is still to be realized that continuing education can be an integration tool for research and teaching.  Nevertheless, we notice an increase in the amount and diversification of extension activities, suggesting that they are slowly being appreciated as a daily practice in the academic life at CCB.
